My name is Amanda Bena and I am currently in my final semester at Xavier University finishing my student teaching placement at Bobbie B. Fairfax School (Hamilton County Board of DDS). I am expected to graduate in May 2014 with a Bachelors Degree in Special Education: Moderate/Intensive , certified K-12, HQT Math and Reading.
Educational Philosophy:
An educational philosopher that I really admire is Jean Piaget because in his theory, he accepts that there are differences in developmental process. This means that teachers need to assess the students based on development and not in normative standards. I honestly think that there is the ability for every child to learn. For the special educator, it might take some time to figure out how the child will learn, but I believe there is always a way. My goal is to be an advocate for my students, because as a Moderate/Intensive Special Educator, many of my students will not be able to advocate for themselves.
Every student should have the opportunity to be involved in a regular education classroom. For some of my future students, it may not be possible to have them in a general education setting all day due to different variables. However, I think all students should at least have a few hours a week in the general education setting. Even if they are not able to fully complete the workload in those classes they will be learning other important skills, such as working together with others, and social skills.
